Self-Drive Safaris in Namibia: Water & Waste Management
Namibia is the driest country in Sub-Saharan Africa. The availability of water is a constant challenge, and the harsh, dry climate means waste does not decompose easily. As your trusted Namibia DMC, we prioritise education on proper Water and Waste Management to ensure your responsible self-drive tour leaves no trace on this fragile, beautiful land.
Water Conservation Tips for Self-Drive Tours
Water is the most precious resource in an arid environment. Your commitment to saving water is a direct act of arid environment conservation.
Mindful Consumption: Use water sparingly for all activities. Remember: Every drop counts.
Washing Up: Use a minimal amount of water and biodegradable soap for dishes. Scrape plates clean before washing. Capture and reuse “grey water” (e.g., dishwater) to douse campfires or water non-sensitive shrubs (at least $\text{60 m}$ from water sources).
Personal Hygiene: Opt for quick “bush showers” or use pre-moistened wipes for light cleaning, saving precious tank water for drinking and cooking.
Report Leaks: If you notice any leaks at a campsite or water point, immediately report it to the camp management.
The Golden Rule: Pack It In, Pack It Out
The principle of proper Waste Disposal Guidelines is non-negotiable for sustainable camping practices in Namibia.
No Burning: Never burn plastic, aluminium, or glass, as they release toxic fumes and do not disintegrate.
The Three-Bag System: We recommend keeping three separate, sealed bags in your vehicle:
Dry Rubbish: Plastics, cans, dry paper.
Wet/Food Scraps: Organic waste (to be disposed of far from camp or properly sealed until a disposal point is reached).
Recycling: If you can separate cans and glass (only feasible in major towns like Windhoek or Swakopmund).
Responsible Disposal: Carry all waste with you until you reach a large town or designated waste facility capable of handling it. Do not rely on remote conservancy bins, which can attract wildlife.
Managing Human Waste on Your Self-Drive Tour
-
This is the most critical aspect of minimal impact camping for health and environmental protection.
-
Use Facilities: Always use the toilets provided at campsites and lodges.
-
When in the Bush: If ablutions are not available (e.g., roadside emergency), solid human waste must be buried in a “cathole” dug 6-8 inches deep and $\text{60 m}$ (200 feet) away from any water source, campsite, or road.
-
Hygiene Disposal: All toilet paper, wet wipes, and hygiene products must be placed in a sealed bag and packed out. Do not bury these items; they do not decompose quickly in the arid environment and can be dug up by animals.

By following these simple Self-Drive Camping Ethics, you ensure your adventure is an active contribution to conservation.
